A Cry for Help: Mom Trying to save her home
Story
Subject: A Mother’s Cry for Help: Please Save Our Home
Hello,
My name is Apryl. I’m a 38-year-old single mom from Riverside, Ohio, living near Parkwood Elementary with my 15-year-old son. Writing this is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do, but I’m at my breaking point, and I don’t know where else to turn.
Life hasn’t just been hard lately—it’s been relentless. Before the pandemic, I was a bartender, working hard to provide for my son and feeling proud of the life we were building. But when my dad became paraplegic from diabetes complications and a severe spinal infection, everything changed. I left my job to care for him full-time, thinking we’d get help from doctors or home care nurses. That help never came. For years, it was just me, struggling to take care of him and still be there for my son.
Recently, I had to make the heartbreaking decision to move my dad into a rehabilitation center. It was what he needed, but now I’m left trying to rebuild a life for my son and me, and I feel like I’m failing. No matter how many jobs I apply for or how hard I try, it’s not enough.
We’ve lost everything—three cars gone, one of them destroyed in a fire on Christmas morning that also damaged our home. Now, we’re on the verge of losing the last thing we have: our home. I owe $1,400 for November rent, and December’s $1,250 is right around the corner. Our power bill is $400 overdue, and our internet, which I desperately need to search for jobs, has been shut off for over a month, leaving a $301 balance.
I’ve tried everything—applying for assistance, working odd jobs—but nothing has come through. To make matters worse, my landlord raised our rent by $300. Programs like PRC won’t have funds available until 2025. We have no family to turn to, no safety net to catch us.
I’m terrified. My son deserves so much more than this. He deserves to feel safe, to have a home for Christmas, to not see his mom crying every night because I don’t know how to fix this. I’ve always been the one to push through and figure it out, but this time, I can’t do it alone.
Please, if you can find it in your heart to help us, I would be forever grateful. Whether it’s financial support, a resource I may not know about, or just sharing my story with someone who can help—it all means the world to me. I’m praying for a miracle because right now, that’s all I have left.
Thank you for reading and for any kindness you can offer. I’ll never forget it.
With all my heart
