Shelter for my Family
Story
Note: The real names in this story have been changed to protect the identity of the characters.
In a small town wrapped in dust and quiet dreams, a girl named Amara was born into the arms of a mother who carried both love and heartbreak in her heart. Amara never met her father. He disappeared like mist when her mother was still carrying her, leaving only a name and a trail of silence behind.
Her mother, Lila, was young and full of quiet strength. With no one else to turn to, she took a job as a live-in maid in a big house filled with polished floors and distant people. Because she had to live where she worked, Amara couldn’t stay with her. So the little girl became a wanderer of homes—not by choice, but by circumstance.
One month, she’d be with Aunt Miriam, who had a laugh like wind chimes and let Amara eat cereal for dinner. Next, she’d be with Aunt Doreen, who made her do chores to “build character” and didn’t believe in hugging. Sometimes, there was no room, no time, no welcome. Each goodbye came with a suitcase and a brave smile she didn’t feel.
Amara’s dream was simple: to have a place to live with her mom and stay with her—always. But no matter how hard she wished, that dream never came true. Eventually, she got used to moving from one family’s house to another, carrying her hopes in a suitcase that never stayed unpacked for long.
After Amara became an adult, she got married and had two children—a boy and a girl. Her top priority has always been to buy a house for her kids, to give them the stable home she never had. But no matter how hard she tries, that dream still feels out of reach.
She and her husband simply don’t make enough to qualify for a mortgage loan. And saving money is almost impossible. They were both born in a country with no retirement plan for the generation before them, so as only children of single mothers, they’ve been financially responsible for their moms since they were young. From food to medicine to clothes, their mothers rely entirely on them.
Still, Amara keeps going—driven by the hope that someday, she’ll give her children the home she always dreamed of.
After the pandemic, housing prices skyrocketed, making Lila’s dream feel even further out of reach. What was already difficult now felt nearly impossible. And it wasn’t just about having a home anymore—it was about having enough space. Their mothers were aging, and Lila knew that soon, they might not be able to care for themselves. A bigger house wasn’t a luxury. It was a necessity.
Still, despite everything—despite the years of moving, sacrificing, and dreaming without answers—Lila’s heart stayed soft. Her life hadn’t been easy, but her family brought her deep joy. The sound of her children’s laughter, the quiet strength in her husband’s support, the familiar voices of their mothers at the dinner table—those were the pieces of a home she carried with her.
And through it all, she never stopped believing in miracles.
Even if she had been waiting her whole life, Lila still believed that one day, they would move into their dream house. That she would watch her children run through rooms that belonged to them, not to a landlord. That she would finally give them the stable home she never had—but always believed was possible.
Because if there was one thing Lila had learned, it was that hope, even when stretched thin, could still hold the weight of a dream.
