Short Story
My name is Mike. I’ve fought my way out of addiction, survived the court system, and have now been sober for 3.5 years. I lost my children and my family during the darkest time of my life, but I worked hard, stayed committed, and earned full custody of my oldest daughter. She is my world and the reason I keep pushing forward.
Even with all the progress I’ve made, raising a teenage daughter completely alone has been incredibly hard. I’m working, but right now my income is only enough for us to survive—not enough to get ahead or secure stable housing. Because of my felony record and damaged credit, I keep getting denied places to live, no matter how responsible or sober I’ve become.
I’m asking for support to help us finally build a stable home: housing application fees, deposits, and basic essentials for my daughter. I’ve come so far, but I can’t do this last part alone. Any help means the world to us.
Rebuilding Fatherhood
Story
My name is Mike, and I’m sharing my story because I’m at a point in my life where I’ve done everything in my power to rebuild—but I still can’t seem to get ahead. Asking for help isn’t easy, especially after fighting for so long to stand on my own, but right now I’m doing it for my daughter and for the future we’re trying so hard to create.
Addiction stole years of my life. It cost me my family, my stability, and my self-worth. I went through the courts, probation, and the painful reality of losing the people who meant the most to me. There were days when I didn’t think I would make it out, and nights when I felt completely alone in my battle.
But I refused to give up.
I committed to treatment. I faced my mistakes. I put in the work every single day. And today, I’m proud to say that I have been sober for 3.5 years. That sobriety has allowed me to accomplish something many said would be impossible—I earned full custody of my oldest daughter. She is my world, my motivation, and the reason I stay strong even on the hardest days.
But rebuilding your life after losing everything is harder than people realize.
I’m raising a teenage daughter completely on my own with no family support. Emotionally, mentally, and financially, it’s all on my shoulders. And even though I am working, the truth is that my income is only enough to survive, not enough to move forward. Every paycheck goes straight to basic living expenses, and there’s nothing left to save or invest in a better future.
On top of that, my past continues to follow me everywhere. My felony record and damaged credit make it extremely difficult to secure stable housing. I’ve been denied multiple times, even though I’m doing everything right. I’m sober. I’m working. I’m raising my child. I’m staying out of trouble. Yet every door that closes makes me feel like no matter how hard I fight, I can’t catch a break.
For the first time in years, I was finally starting to see a little light in my life—but lately, that light feels like it’s slipping away. I’m discouraged, exhausted, and scared of failing my daughter after fighting so hard to get her back.
Why I’m Asking for Help (Financial Transparency)
Your support will go directly toward helping me:
Secure stable housing (security deposit, first month’s rent, application fees, background/credit waivers)
Catch up on essential bills like utilities and phone (needed for work)
Afford transportation costs to keep my job
Provide basic necessities for my daughter, including clothing, school items, and household supplies
Every dollar will be used for survival and stability—nothing more, nothing less.
I’m not asking for a handout. I’m asking for a chance to finally move forward after years of fighting my way back. I’m doing everything I can, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come, but right now I can’t do this alone. Your help would mean more than I can ever express.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story, and thank you for any support you can give—whether it’s donating, sharing, or simply offering encouragement. It all makes a difference.
