Short Story
Hello Dear Reader,
I hate having to write something like this but I’m getting desperate. I was disabled at birth but I have always prided myself on being able to go out and find work to take care of myself.
From the age of 16 (2004) up until about 2 years ago (2022) This was not an issue. It was hard to hold down day jobs because of the disability, often being “to slow at completing tasks” or not physically able to. . But my work ethic got me consistent freelancing and contracting work.
The downside of this became pushing a body with cerebral palsy well beyond its limits. I suffered an injury in 2020 that required surgery on the side of my body that has CP.
In 2021 I returned to work. However my body continued to fail me causing more breakdowns and body failing and surgeries.
In 2022 I had to make the choice to no longer seek physical manual labor with my body constantly in pain.
These last few years we have accumulated a lot of debt. From medical expenses and living expenses to buying products to flip online for a small profit to keep bills paid.
I find as much work from home opportunities as I can and my wife door dashes 7 days a week so we can stay a float. i
In all we have around 50k in debt (which is way better than it could be) the biggest problem with this is about 7k of it is past due.
I get roughly $900 a month from SSI. Which I use to pay our rent (600) utilities ($100) & car loan ($200) so my wife can continue to door dash. . I typically bring in $2-$500 in odd freelance work from home jobs. My wife brings in around $2000 a month door dashing. this is thankfully enough to keep the debt collectors at bay & affords us one meal a day each (2 when we have food shelf rations)
Our reality has become paying enough to keep collectors at bay with not being fast enough to make any real dent. The interest piles up and keeps us in this endless circle.
I understand this keeps us afloat. but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t afraid that without some kind of miracle we will be stuck in this cycle forever.
I fully understand that I’m not the only one in a position like this. and to be honest there are probably people out there more deserving of the money than me.
If anyone can spare anything it will go directly to trying to get our stuff straightened out. I’m not looking for our entire debt to be wiped out by any means. That is my burden to bare. but I’m getting desperate to get our past due debt under control so going into 2025 we can breathe and hopefully readjust our strategy to tackling the rest of our debt.
I’m also doing this more for my wife than me as I can tell the stress of working 7 days a week is wearing on her.
Honestly any little bit helps and Is appreciated. again I hate writing stuff like this.
If you took the time to read this thank you for hearing my story even if you can’t help. and I am truly sorry.
Have an amazing day & know that i feel like utter crap having to write this.
