Dear Friends,

My name is Kalum Chamara, and my family and I live in Pahathgama, Hanwella, Sri Lanka — a flood-prone area where disaster strikes almost every year.

When heavy rains fall, the stream near our home overflows, and in just 10 to 15 minutes, the water can rise to 12–20 feet, completely submerging our house. These floods destroy everything we own — furniture, clothes, essential documents — and even cause cracks in our walls.

Often, it takes up to a week for the water to recede, leaving us in unsafe, wet conditions or forcing us to evacuate to open, unprotected spaces. I care for my wife, my young son, and my elderly parents — and during each flood, their lives are at serious risk.

We urgently need to build an upper floor for our home. This will give us a safe refuge during floods, protect our belongings, and finally allow us to live without fear. The estimated cost for building this upper floor is LKR 8,000,000 (about USD 26,000).
