Story

In search of healing and a fresh start, I moved from Texas to Los Angeles, hoping to finally grow and flourish in a way I couldn’t back home. With limited resources, I moved into a communal sober living home under a hardship scholarship. I signed a contract stating that I wouldn’t need to reimburse the program until I had a stable, full-time job for at least 60 days. I also committed to group sessions and therapy, determined to grow and transform my life.

But just 31 days into my journey, tragedy struck. My father passed away unexpectedly on July 4th. Having lost my mother in 2020, I suddenly found myself an orphan. As the youngest of three siblings (by 18 years), I’ve always felt distant from my family. While I cherish my relationships with my nieces and nephews, I had no real support during this loss. Even longtime friends didn’t reach out despite my pleas for connection, leaving me to navigate my grief alone.

Shortly after, I learned that my father’s annuity would be split equally among my siblings and me. While no amount of money could fill the void of losing him, I saw this as a blessing from my dad to help me rebuild my life. I opened a bank account with my inheritance, planning to use it responsibly to secure my independence and future.

I confided in my therapist about receiving the funds, but the next morning, the regional manager of my sober living confronted me, demanding payment for “back rent” and an “initial housing contribution” I’d never heard of before. Despite my contract clearly outlining a different timeline, I was coerced into paying $6,000 over four months—without having a job.

Feeling manipulated and betrayed—especially when my therapist disclosed my inheritance without my consent—I left the sober living, hoping to transition to an apartment. I believed I had enough funds to secure a home and start anew.

Unfortunately, my challenges didn’t end there. Desperate to find housing, and not meeting the requirements of 650 credit score, employment for at least a year, and monthly income being at least three times that of the rent, I fell victim to a rental scam. I paid $14,000—an entire year’s lease upfront—only to discover that the so-called landlord had no affiliation with the property. When I arrived to move in, the keys didn’t work, and I learned I’d been deceived.

Now, I’m A THIRTY-SOMETHING YEAR OLD WOMAN living in my car with my beloved dog, broke and without a home. My remaining family has refused to help, and I’m struggling daily to find any glimmer of hope.

I came to Los Angeles to change my life for the better, but I now find myself in a nightmare I never anticipated.

I am humbly asking for your support to rebuild my life. Any contribution helps and all are greatly appreciated.

Your generosity and kindness are my lifeline.
