Short Story

Please help me be able to give my mother a place to call home. Somewhere where we are not sleeping on couches and praying that we can have one more day before we are kicked to the curb again.

Story

My name is Amy and I am the daughter of an amazing woman named Lisa. My mother is a very strong woman that refuses to ask for help even if it would help save her life. In November of 2023 we lost the man i considered to by my dad to cancer after a long battle of radiation and chemo treatments. This very understandably broke something inside my mother and she seemed to slowly give up. The house that we lived in was fully owned by my dad but he didnt have a will and my mother and he were engaged but not married. As a result the home and land and everything else went to his son. After 16 years of living in that house we were forced to leave. Thankfully my older sister invited us to come and stay with her in a different state until we could find a place of our own. Unfortunately that was easier said than done.

My mother has many health problems that make even the simplest tasks extremely difficult. She cannot climb stairs or walk for more than a couple minutes at a time. Even cooking a meal or taking a shower is now beyond her capabilities. I hate seeing this strong and independent woman brought so low by something she cant control.

Right after we moved to a whole new state her disability was suspended to be reviewed and now 6 months later the only update they will tell her is that they are going over her medical files to see if she is still disabled. This is a huge blow because while I am able to make a few dollars here and there, I cannot leave her alone to get a full time job to pay the bills. She has taken some very nasty falls when left alone for even a few minutes because she wants so hard to be able to do things on her own.

We applied for an apartment when we first moved and finally heard back last week, after 6 months, that they had a place for us. The problem is that after paying for storage for our things every month and other usual expenses our savings are non existent.

I don’t know what else to do. I don’t want to have to ask or beg for help but after months of fighting every day to make some kind of a living while taking care of her at the same time I am at the bottom of the barrel. I’m scared that she will decide its not worth it to keep pushing on. She speaks of my dad waiting for her and she cant keep him waiting anymore. Quite frankly im terrified. I need some help, literally anything at this point I will be forever thankful for.

  • Please help. Rock bottom.

We were denied our apartment that we were told was guaranteed so now we are having to figure out what to do. I will be out on the street with a disabled mother and no way back to our home state. No one will help us anymore. We moved to be closer to family and they cant do anything for us. This whole move was a waste of time and now we are stuck in a state we don\'t know with no way home.
