Story

Dear: You
You do not know me, and I do not know you personally, but I would like to share my story.
I have been a CAN (Certified Nursing Assistant) for over 15 years. I absolutely loved it. Back in February of 2020 I was hurt on the job, due to no fault of my own. I was working at Skagit Regional Hospital in Mt. Vernon Washington when I entered a patient’s room, checked the white board and her mobility status was labeled “STAND BY ASSIST”. This patient needed help going to the bathroom, so I handed her the walker, and when she stood up, she instantly fell, unfortunately pulling me down with her. I then got another CNA to help me as she was not a stand-by assist. Immediately after my shift, I went to the doctor for my right shoulder. At first my doctor tried a cortisone shot which backfired and did the opposite of what it was supposed to do. Then I did 11 months of physical therapy until my doctor told me I needed surgery to fix my bicep tendon. After surgery I got frozen shoulder due to only seeing his Physician’s Assistant who told me to be in a sling non-stop for 12 weeks. More physical therapy for another year. My doctor then decided to send me to a different one because nothing was helping. My second doctor recommended a second surgery to fix the frozen shoulder and shave part of my clavicle bone. So, we did, and after that I was to do more physical therapy and then work-conditioning. I did everything that I was told to do, not once being checked on by my employer.
My worker’s comp has finally ended as of the week of July 31, 2024. I have been on workers compensation for over 4 years trying rehab and everything they suggest with no success.
I am a 36-year-old single parent to twin girls who are 9. I am living with my parents as I cannot afford anything else at this time.
I absolutely loved being a CNA. Helping others and making a difference in their lives. Giving the elderly and the underdogs the respect that they deserve but sometimes don’t get. But due to my physical limitations I am no longer able to do so. So, I would like to go back to school to be a massage therapist. I could go back to school for something like medical billing and coding, but I desperately want to make my mark on this world by saving lives. Whether it is to give free elderly massages, or people in need, or to know which muscle hurts and helps alleviate pain. I truly believe that this is God’s plan for me. Just because I cannot be in the emergency room doesn’t mean I can’t help others.
If you have read this far, bless your heart. I usually do not ask for help. I pride myself in being a strong independent mother. And I try to teach my children that hard work will pay off. But sometimes, apparently, I need to get over my pride and ask for help. The tuition for Arlington School of Massage Therapy is $15,000. I have already graciously received a $1000 scholarship, but $14000 left to go. So I started a go-fund me account. If you would please share my story and my GoFundMe account, it would be so much appreciated. And if you can or are inclined to, please donate. Like I said, I know you don’t know me, but I am a real person with real daughters, and this is a real plea. Thank you so much for reading and have a blessed day. PS, you could also say a little prayer to help get me to massage therapy school as well. There is power in prayer, and I will take any that I can get.
Sincerely,
Hailley Thome
