Summary
Together we can break the cycle of poverty and disease by educating orphan children! Send an orphan child to school for a year! You can help change the life of orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) in very rural Western Nigeria. Your donation will provide everything from school uniforms, exercise books, pens and pencils, rulers, and geometry sets, to washing soap. These children live every day without electricity or running water. We can make a difference in their young lives! The house of Brethren Gospel Christian Church is helping vulnerable orphans in Nigeria to survive and thrive also works to overcome the lack of hope and self-esteem of orphan children living in situations of extreme poverty by empowering communities to bring about sustainable changes. Poverty is a major barrier to education in Nigeria. The 2024 UNESCO – Education found that Nigeria had a net enrollment rate of 44% for primary school children. This means that 56% of primary-age children in Nigeria are not attending school. Education is the greatest equalizer. It gives children, even from the humblest of backgrounds, a fighting chance in life – a ticket that we all aspire. This ticket, however, is not available to all children. Nearly one million primary school -aged children in Nigeria are still out-of-school – the ninth highest number of any country in the world, mostly due to poverty. This project is working to change that. By providing scholarships, uniforms, school supplies, school books, nutritious school lunches, school furniture, teacher support, and repairing classrooms, this project is helping orphans children go to school and enhance their education. The house of Brethren Gospel Christian Church plans to educate 200 orphan students every year. Currently 1,800 orphan students are beneficiaries of the program. Along with an excellent education, these children will receive 3 nutritious meals a day, a uniform and have a safe space to live, study and play.
Challenges
Lack of quality education is a primary factor preventing poverty-stricken families from opportunities of growth. Without quality education, the orphan children are unable to unlock their full potential and end up begging on the streets. Living in conditions of misery and constant morbidity, they cannot receive the good care and education, which they deserve. When an orphan child doesn’t have access to education and basic living conditions, it impacts negative of each part of his life – the worldview, the probability of violence and disease. Thousands of students have seen their dreams of continuing with education ended for lack of funds to pay school fees. This happens every year when students are expected to transition from one level of education to another. The orphan children that we are working with come from extremely poor households and the conditions in Nigeria’s slums are shocking. The slums are notorious for drug and alcohol abuse, violent crime and abject poverty. People face problems of overcrowding, poor sanitation, insufficient shelter and food insecurity on a daily basis. Many children have been orphaned, neglected or simply abandoned as a result of poverty or sickness. Nigeria’s education system has been severely affected by recent crises, including war, the Ebola epidemic, and poverty. As a result, many classrooms are inadequate, and resources are insufficient. Many families cannot afford to send their children to school, especially if they have to pay for school fees, uniforms, and other supplies. Without a good education, Nigerian children will not have the skills and knowledge they need to succeed and will be more likely to live in poverty and crime.
Solution
The House of Brethren Gospel Christian Church rescues students stuck in the villages, slums or children homes giving them a chance to continue with education. 1,800 students from poor backgrounds have in the past three years benefited from the House of Brethren Gospel Christian Church Education sponsorship program. We are passionate about empowering these orphan children and communities, letting them know they are loved and helping them to overcome their situations of poverty. We support vulnerable orphans in Nigeria by providing for both their immediate needs and strengthening their futures through educating, feeding, living, protecting, and skilling. This project will make a difference in Nigeria by supporting education. We will provide necessary infrastructure and resources such as school furniture, scholarships, books, school supplies, uniforms, building repairs, new classrooms, and teacher salary supplements. This ensures that orphan children can stay in school and learn effectively. By empowering them through education, we can break the cycle of poverty and crime, and open doors to new opportunities for a brighter future. But together we will give them hope and a chance for a better start in their lives. That will be possible by giving them free access to quality education. Your help will give more orphan kids the opportunity to go to school.
Long-Term Impact
The House of Brethren Gospel Christian Church provides free access to education for orphan children, year after year. Education improves health, results in jobs, and empowers individuals. Educated orphan children better understand their rights, advocate for themselves and their families, and are less likely to fall victim to exploitation. They are more engaged in community issues, more apt to vote, take action, and develop into leaders who tackle problems that impact the future of their families, communities, and country. Giving orphan children the opportunity to explore and study is an important first step to their independence in life. Education is fundamental to sustainable development; it is a powerful driver for reducing poverty and improving health. With care and knowledge, we will give not only better present, but a better future. For them and for the next generations. By giving orphan students, a chance to be in class, the orphan- boys and girls are rescued from potential dangers such as drug and alcohol abuse, crime and teenage pregnancy. The beneficiaries are able to keep their dreams and hopes alive. An empowered orphan students are a great asset to their family and community. Over the last 10 years we have provided 1.5 million hot meals to hungry children; free education for 2,000 children; counselling for 3,900 vulnerable young people; vital skills training for 700 women; rescued 1,500 children from abandonment and reunited 60 children back with loving families. Our vision is to see orphan children’s lives transformed, communities empowered and poverty reduced throughout rural Western Nigeria. This project’s impact is transformative, providing underprivileged children with life-changing education and opportunities for growth and development. By enhancing the quality of education, we are not only improving the lives of orphan students but also transforming communities and the nation as a whole. Investing in education is vital for long-term economic development and stability, and by supporting this project, we are laying the foundation for a brighter future for Nigerian families. With the addition of a dormitory in 2017 we’re able to provide boarding to orphans children and are well on our way to become financially sustainable.
