Short Story

Nehemiah Trust Pakistan: Water Hand Pump Project

Nehemiah Trust Pakistan, a nonprofit organization dedicated to “helping the helpless,” works to improve the quality of life for underprivileged communities through education, healthcare, and poverty relief. Recognizing the urgent need for clean drinking water in interior Sindh—where contaminated water leads to severe diseases, high child mortality rates, and risks for women and children—the trust launched the Water Hand Pump Project.

This initiative installs hand pumps in remote villages, providing access to safe drinking water and reducing the need for women and children to travel long distances for unsafe water sources. Each pump costs $600 to install, and with 150 villages in desperate need, Nehemiah Trust Pakistan seeks partners to support this life-saving cause.

Story

NEHEMIAH TRUST PAKISTAN

WATER HAND PUMP PROJECT

Nehemiah Trust Pakistan is nonprofit, recognized and registered organization in Pakistan with an objective of ‘helping the helpless’ is made up of dedicated individuals who are both excited about and committed to the goal, dreams, work and making accessible to the underprivileged, both spiritual and physical resources to improve the quality of their lives, health and future. Promoting education, health clinics and to relief to poverty victims.

Experience

During our work in interior Sindh we have always encounter with the issue regarding basic need of life CLEAN DRINKING WATER, the impure drinking water is the basic cause of death and several diseases in adults and for very special in infants and children. Women and children have to travel several kilometers to gain the water which is so impure and dangerous.

Highly Impure Water in Pakistan

Impure water is one of the major threats to public health in Pakistan. Drinking water quality is poorly managed and monitored. Pakistan ranks at number 80 among 122 nations regarding drinking water quality. Drinking water sources, both surface and groundwater are contaminated with coli forms, toxic metals and pesticides throughout the country.

It’s Contribution in Mortality Rate

Impure water causes 40% of deaths in Pakistan annually. Around 62 percent 0f Pakistan’s urban and 84 percent of its rural population do not treat their water, resulting in 100 million cases of diarrheal diseases registered in hospitals, with 40 percent of deaths attributed to drinking polluted water. A survey estimates that each year nearly 53,000 Pakistani children die of bacterial diarrhea from contaminated water.

Project Purpose

Sindh largely is vast desert area and eventually gets low rainfall. Interior Sindh is the worst affected area where drinking water is still a big challenge. Large population is poor and live in villages far away from cities.

Several children die with thirst and hunger, many minor girls, boys and women are sexually abused while wandering in search of water. In 2021 as per dawn news 477 child abuse cases were registered in Sindh only, while the total figure with unreported cases is very high.

During free medical camps organized by NTP, we also discovered that the root cause of disease is impure drinking water. Our Water Hand Pump Project was initiated in interior Sindh in villages where children and women wander in search of water. They must walk for miles and carry water for their daily use, but despite these difficult efforts, the water they get is unclean and unhealthy. It is stagnant water where animals bathe and drink. Water hand pumps installed by the NTP team bring a smile of ease to these struggling women and children, and they do not have to travel in search of water and get neat and clean underground water.

Grant needed to install Water Hand Pumps

Nehemiah Team is looking for partners to stand with us in this humanitarian cause and provide people with clean drinking water. The estimated cost to install one water hand pump is 600 USD. We have nearly 150 villages that need water hand pumps as they don’t have water storage nearly and women and children are forced to carry water from far away areas by walking miles.
