Short Story

Bridge the Gap is a grassroots fund created to support disabled individuals during the long wait for SSDI approval. Even with basic aid, people still face daily costs—transportation, prescriptions, hygiene, phone bills, and more—with no income to cover them. This fund helps fill those gaps, offering dignity, mobility, and relief when life won’t wait. Every dollar helps someone survive the wait with hope and humanity.

Story

Every day, thousands of disabled Americans wait months—sometimes years—for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) to be approved. During that time, life doesn’t pause. Bills still come. Cars break down. Medications need to be picked up. Loved ones fall ill. And for many, there’s no income, no safety net, and no way to cover the basics.

I know this struggle firsthand. I applied for SSDI in April 2024. I’ve been denied twice and now await a hearing with an Administrative Law Judge. While I’m grateful to have food and shelter, I have no income. I can’t afford a vehicle, insurance, or even gas money to get to medical appointments or pick up prescriptions. I’ve missed time with family—like when my father was hospitalized three hours away—because there was simply no way to get there.

This fund exists to bridge the gap between survival and stability. It’s not about luxury—it’s about dignity. Donations will help cover essential day-to-day living costs for SSDI applicants during their wait. This list is not all-inclusive, as each individual has their own personal necessities:

  • Toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags
  • Laundry detergent, dryer sheets, stain remover
  • Cleaning supplies (disinfectant, dish soap, sponges)
  • Light bulbs, batteries, extension cords
  • Basic furniture or replacements (e.g., mattress, chair)
  • Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion
  • Toothpaste, toothbrushes, floss, mouthwash
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Razors, shaving cream, nail clippers
  • Haircuts or basic grooming
  • Aluminum foil, plastic wrap, storage bags
  • Dish soap, scrub brushes, dish rack
  • Small appliance repairs or replacements (microwave, coffee maker)
  • Cell phone bills or prepaid minutes
  • Internet access for telehealth, legal meetings, and staying connected
  • Replacement chargers, headphones, or basic tech accessories
  • Gas money for rides from friends or family
  • Bus passes, paratransit fares, or Uber/Lyft for emergencies
  • Car registration, insurance, or repairs (if vehicle is still owned)
  • Over-the-counter medications (pain relievers, allergy meds, antacids)
  • Supplements or vitamins not covered by Medicaid
  • First aid supplies (bandages, antiseptic, heating pads)
  • Medical devices (canes, braces, compression socks)
  • Postage for mailing paperwork or legal documents
  • Pet food or vet visits (especially for emotional support animals)
  • Travel costs to visit sick family or attend important events
  • Small gifts or cards to maintain relationships and morale

We’re building a community of support for those who’ve paid into the system for years and deserve help while they wait for what they’ve earned. With your help, Bridge the Gap can grow into a national movement—one that says: we see you, we believe you, and we’re here to help you live, not just survive.
