Story

A Whisper, a Cry for Help in an Empty Room

Until a few years ago, things were… okay. Not perfect. I didn’t have much, and life kept throwing punches, but I could take them. At least I had my health. I could get back up. Work, help my family, do what needed doing.

Six years ago, I got into an accident that left me unable to properly walk, sit, or stand for long. I tried multiple treatments, but nothing worked. At least not fast enough. It ate through all my savings and my family’s savings over the years trying to get me back on my feet. Finally, after a long rehabilitation and leaning hard on my family’s support, I got most of the use of my legs back. But those years trapped, barely moving? They wrecked the rest of me. Liver, kidneys, stomach, eyes – the list keeps growing. And now? I’ve had to stop treatments. The tests, the medicines… the cost every single day became too much. Worse, I know eating cheap, barely enough scraps isn’t helping – probably making things worse. But what choice do I have?

I’m hitting my mid-thirties now, and my social life… well, it died. I stopped reaching out when I saw how most people reacted to the accident – everyone backed off, treating me like dead weight. Can’t really blame them, I guess. Years of this solitude? It’s changed me. Holding a simple face-to-face conversation feels like climbing a mountain most days.

What kept me breathing? A few bucks from odd jobs, and my family. God, my family. They never quit on me, gave everything they had and then some. I need to help them. But this constant stress… it’s scrambled my brain. My thinking’s muddy. I forget things constantly – little things, big things, whole things. Sometimes it comes back late, sometimes it’s just… gone. They worry about me more than I worry about myself. I see it. But opening up about this fog in my head? I can’t. They see something’s wrong, but since I don’t talk, they… leave it be.

The root of it all? Money. Pure and simple. I’ve tried finding new work, different fields. Nothing sticks. I can’t put in long hours – my body gives out, my mind blanks. I’d do anything online, anything at all. But what? How? I’ve searched until my eyes blurred, but nothing makes sense, nothing clicks. I feel weaker by the day, not just in body, but… inside. My mind just won’t work right.

I know there are people worse off. I wish everyone could get the help they need. But right now? I’m drowning. It took every scrap of courage I had left to write this down. I’ve never said any of this out loud. To anyone.

Please… is there anyone out there? Anyone in this whole world who can help me? What do I do? Please. Help me. I just… I don’t know anymore.
